Main train station Zurich

On the platform roof above tracks number 17 and 18 of the Zurich main train station and facing the Swiss National Museum, an innovative solar power plant has been producing electricity since 1999.

A big part of the challenge for the realization of the solar power plant was created by the high requirements toward the architectural design. Additionally the “reserve” load capacity of the lightweight structure supporting the overhanging roof was given as next to none. The installed solar modules including the mounting system and cabling were to weigh max. 9 kg/sqm. And last but not least, the almost flat roof sloped at only 7° and had to remain waterproof on the long run. Due to their broad experience, energieburo could fulfill all the requirements and secure the solar modules against wind and snow loads. The PV plant has demonstrated its durability when it survived winter storm “Lothar” without any damages at Christmas time 1999.
